Amir Tabakh asked for the support of ASPE members by writing letters to support the water recycling program proposed by Amir for the LADWP. You can contact Val Amezquita at val.amezquita@ladwp.com for more information.

The Board reviewed the Proposed ASPE National Bylaw Amendment by Haig Demerjian. The amendment proposes changes to make it easier for chapters to recruit students as chapter members at a reduced dues rate for the students. The proposed amendment redefines the criteria and benefits of being a student member. This should benefit the students and help to increase chapter membership in the future. To review the amendment, please contact Haig Demergian at demergian@sbcglobal.net.

Please note that Hal Alvord and Gregory Morin are now the signers on the ASPELA checking account.

Hal and the Board adjourned the Board Meeting in time to start the Technical Meeting.

General Meeting Minutes  August 2010
Chris MacKnight
Administrative Secretary

Hal Alvord opened the meeting at 7:10 PM. We had 15 visitors (hopefully 15 new members someday). The past Presidents in attendance were Ed Salzberg, Mike Nishida, Kook Dean, April Trafton, and Vivian Enriquez.

Haig Demerjian, our engineer member who teaches at UCLA, got up to present certificates to the attending students who are graduating from UCLA this year. He reminded us and them that students are the future of our group and engineering in general.

Vivian Enriquez got up to make some announcements regarding upcoming ASPELA meetings. The October 6th Technical Meeting will begin at 6:30 PM instead of 7 PM due to the time constraints of the speaker. The November Technical Meeting will he held on November 10 due to the ASPE National Convention being held the prior week. There will be no regular meeting in December. Instead ASPELA will have a Holiday Party on Friday, December 3 at Steven's Steak House. Note that your significant other is FREE to attend the meeting and have dinner at no additional cost.

Vivan also announced this year's scholarship winner from ASPELA. The winner is Nelson Diaz, a 3D Designer in the Mechanical Department of Arup. His essay on why he is interested in plumbing design will be posted in the newsletter.

Ron Bradford announced that this year's ASPELA picnic will be held at the usual place in Elysian Park on Sunday, Sept. 19 from 11am - 3 PM. Kids under 12 years old are free. $100 donations from Engineers, Engineering Companies and Affiliate Members are needed for the picnic.

Ron Bradford also levied fines in his entertaining (completely ruthless) style. The fines were as follows: Haig Demergian - $1 for each student attending. The students were challenged to pay the fines back once they started working.

Our speaker for the evening was Jim Anderlik from the Cast Iron Soil Pipe Institute. Highlights of the topic are below:

  1. CISPI was founded in 1949
  2. Ancient civilizations used pipe and tubing made from clay, lead, bronze, and even wood.
  3. In 1455 a Berman cannon manufacturer invented cast iron pipe by pouring molten iron into a cannon mold.
  4. The first recorded use of cast iron pipe was at Langensalza, Germany in about 1562 where the pipe supplied water to a fountain.
  5. In 1664 Louis the XIV installed cast iron pipe for the fountains at the Palace of Versailles. After 340 years, the pipe is still in use.

  16. Corrosive acids are not permitted in domestic systems.
  17. Iron is actually protected by rust.
  18. Cast Iron is a very quiet material for piping.
  19. The coating on Cast Iron Pipe is strictly for cosmetic reasons.

  21. Clean soild free of frozen chuncks and rocks larger than 1.5 inches in diameter must be used to fill the trench around a cast iron pipe.
